Parking Winter 2011

New Parking Lot to Open Soon

Parking will remain a challenge for students and staff returning to campus for Winter Quarter. However, a new parking lot is under construction near the parking garage and could open during the quarter, weather permitting. This video will show you where it's located, along with parking tips:

Real-time parking updates will be provided from 9:00 a.m. until noon during the first two weeks of classes on Facebook and Twitter.

Winter quarter is here and there's some encouraging news on the parking front. I've been a student here for a year -- so I know how challenging it can be. First the good news.

You may remember the old auto shop on the fringe of campus that had been boarded up for years. That was torn down a few months ago.

In its place they've been building a new parking lot for use by Columbus State students. It's off of Jefferson Avenue not far from the parking garage, so it's easy to find. This new lot will add an additional 300 parking spaces. While it won't eliminate tight parking conditions, it should alleviate it a little. With weather permitting, the new lot will open in sometime in January.

Add that lot to the 100 spaces right next to the garage that opened last quarter, plus the 50 across campus at Grove and Grant -- and you've got about 450 new spaces just for students.

Take a look at the areas shaded in orange on this map. Those are the different student parking areas and they're spread out all around campus. If you arrive during peak times, skip the lots closest to campus since they always fill up early. Instead, look further out.

One option is the overflow parking here at Fort Hayes High School just across I-670. It's open Monday through Thursday and it's just about a five minute walk to campus.

There's also the 28-S lot. It's even a little further out but it's one of last areas to fill up each day. It's a couple of blocks behind the bookstore on Mt. Vernon Avenue. Keep all these options in mind.

And don't forget there's real-time parking updates on Twitter from nine 'til noon during the first two weeks of classes. You'll find it at CSCC-underscore-parking. With the new lots there are now well over five-thousand parking spaces on campus -- including a thousand in the parking garage.
