Japan - ANTH 299

Earn credit for ANTH 299 - Japan: Land of the Rising Sun - and study abroad for 11 days in Japan!

This life changing experience will introduce students to the culture and diversity of Japan, a land where the ancient and cutting edge coexist.

From its ancient history and connections to mainland Asia, to becoming the world’s third largest economy (only superseded by China in Summer 2010), Japan offers an excellent opportunity to study different aspects of culture (history, economics, religion, politics, art and architecture, group dynamics, etc.) from an anthropological perspective.

The course will be taught online Spring Quarter 2011, and culminate in the eleven-day study abroad portion during the quarter break (June 15, 2011 – June 25, 2011).

Highlights include:

Guided tours of Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima
Excursions to the Great Buddha of Kamakura, ancient imperial palaces and medieval castles, the Golden Pavilion, Meiji and Miyajima Shrines, and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum
Visit trendy shopping districts such as Harajuku
Travel on the superfast Shinkansen (bullet train)
Sumida river cruise to Asakusa, Tokyo’s “amusement center”
Visit to Hakone National Park, site of Mt. Fuji

Earn credit for SSCI 100 (Globalization: Business and Culture in China Section) and study abroad for 12 days in China! For students with credit for SSCI 100, an independent study (SSCI 299) may be arranged.

This life changing experience will introduce students to one of the world’s economic superpowers. Learn firsthand why China is at the forefront of globalization by examining historical, cultural and economic factors. See the Great Wall and Forbidden City, meet with local companies, and experience the world-famous Hong Kong skyline.

The course will be taught Winter Quarter 2010, and culminate in the twelve-day study abroad portion during spring break (March 19, 2010 – March 30, 2010). Preparatory, and follow-up, course instruction and materials will be provided online.

Highlights include:

Guided tours of Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong
Excursions to the Forbidden City and Great Wall of China
Visits with local companies in Beijing and Shanghai
A visit to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange – the second largest in Asia
Cultural sites including a tea house, the Jade Buddha Temple, and the Jin Mao tower
Delicacies such as a Peking Duck dinner and a Dim Sum lunch
